Februar 19, 2018BREATH involved in successful international study for new treatment approaches for CF
The phase 3 clinical study EXPAND, recently published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, demonstrates the efficacy and safety of a novel CFTR-modulating combination therapy for the treatment of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) with heterozygous Phe508del mutation and an additional mutation with residual CFTR function [1]. With Dr. Felix Ringshausen, senior physician at the clinic of pulmonology and head of study at the Hannover Medical School, BREATH, the Hannover site of the German Center for Lung Diseases (DZL), is the largest European center involved in this international drug study.
January 29, 2018DZL-funded clinical study shows direct influence of the drug combination Lumacaftor/Ivacaftor on CFTR function for the first time
Cystic fibrosis is the most common autosomal recessive hereditary disease in Europe. Since the identification of the disease-causing gene CFTR in 1989, a causal therapy has been researched. The malfunction is caused by autosomal recessive inherited mutations of the CFTR gene, whereby the specific mechanism of the malfunction is dependent on the mutation class. Until just a few years ago, solely symptomatic treatment of patients was possible.
December 8, 2017Since the early days of DZL, the group of Prof. Dr. Axel Haverich at the DZL-site BREATH have been “on the way to an implantable, artificial lung”. Recently the BREATH scientists have successfully applied for additional funds in a 7-digit amount. Their research will be supported through the Focus Program (Schwerpunktprogramm) SPP 2014 of the German Research Society (DFG) over the next 6 years.

September 15, 2017pedCAPNETZ – Multicenter cohorts for community-acquired pneumonia in childhood and youth
Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) in childhood and adolescence is, according to the WHO, one of the most common causes of death in children under 5 years of age. Improvement in the vaccination situation and good treatment possibilities have led to a significant reduction in mortality in developing countries. However, pneumonia is still responsible for 20% of hospital admissions.
September 4, 2017A panel of experts develops a consensus-based statement on exacerbations in patients with bronchiectasis
The time until the first exacerbation as well as the number of exacerbations over a certain period of time is used as a crucial endpoint in many clinical studies on bronchiectasis. When a change in the symptoms is considered to be a deterioration and therefore an exacerbation, has up to now, however, been variously defined. Standardization of the criteria is therefore essential for valid comparison of future studies. A consensus paper on this matter will shortly be published in the European Respiratory Journal.

October 24, 2016This is the age of bronchiectasis – First World Bronchiectasis Conference took place in Hannover
Bronchiectasis is the pathological end result of a number of heterogeneous disease processes.
