Hannover Medical School is one of the most competent and proficient medical university institutions in Germany. On its campus, the MHH combines more than 70 clinics, institutes and research facilities. When it was founded in the 1960s, the MHH decided to adopt the integration model, based on three pillars: patient care, research and teaching. In the teaching field, the MHH has also taken an innovative path with the model university course HannibaL.

The MHH treats 160.000 outpatients and more than 50.000 inpatients each year. As a medical facility providing supramaximal care, a wide range of treatment is available for patients, many of whom are very seriously ill.

With its focus on transplantation medicine and infectiology/immunology, the MHH is one of the best medical centers worldwide. Outstanding importance is placed on pulmonary medicine and, in 1990, the MHH performed the first double lung transplantation in Central Europe.

In 2007, the first lung transplantation was performed in a female patient even though the blood group of the donor did not match her own. In 2012, doctors at the MHH carried out the first living donor lung transplantation in Germany.
